Serious Eats Manila: Kyotako Best Takokoyaki in the Philippines SM Mall of Asia. Kyotako serves the most authentic Takoyaki in Metro Manila today. Kyotako was started in 2015 by Japanese national Keichiro Okamato when he opened his first branch at the University of Santo Tomas. Currently there are 3 branches and today we visit their al fresco stall at SM Mall of Asia.
Takoyaki is a popular street snack originating from Osaka Japan and is essentially an octopus ball cooked in a special molded pan made with a wheat flour based batter. At Kyotako they use 8 different kinds of flour for their takoyaki to ensure the quality is the same even after leaving it out for five minutes. The ingredients including the sauces, flour, powder, bonito flakes are all imported from Japan, but they use local octopus and vegetables for their filling and toppings.
From their menu we would recommend the:
Mentaiko – signature takoyaki drizzled with Kyotako original sauce and mentaiko mayo, then topped with negi, nori, and white sesame seeds
Negi – signature takoyaki complemented with Kewpie mayo and chopped spring onions
